Identifying and mitigating climate risks

The climate crisis has moved past a time for words . . . a time for action. Many companies are recognizing the potential risk not just to society, but to their immediate and long-term business operations.

ZRS applies a well-established, science-based, data-driven methodology to develop tailored analyses and solutions for your organization. ZRS’ climate risk specialists can help your organization:

How to weather climate risks with data-driven strategies

In this video, Lisa Leftwich, ZRS Head of Sustainability Services, and Darren Richardson, North America Head of Sustainable Energy, discuss risks that businesses are facing as a result of weather-related disasters, the critical role of data, and how companies can take action now.

Helping companies take action on their sustainability goals

As they turn sustainability goals into action, ZRS can support customers in:

  • Ensuring implementation of sustainability measures at existing locations does not increase the risk
  • Informed decision making, by identifying sites with significant natural hazard and climate change risks
  • Sustainability reporting in existing frameworks, e.g., TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures)
  • Developing tailored resilience solutions (physical, organizational and insurance)

The importance of climate risk management for businesses

The 2023 Global Risks Report ranked “failure of climate change adaptation” and “natural disasters and extreme weather events” as two of the top three risks in terms of severity over the next decade.1 For businesses, this will have a direct effect on their ability to survive and thrive as severe weather events increase in severity and frequency, impacting their people, their facilities, their supply chains and their bottom line.

Businesses also will be under increasing scrutiny from government and regulatory agencies as new climate/energy legislation emerges, and as communities and activists demand greater responsiveness to climate volatility. Building more sustainable operations is not only the right thing to do, increasingly it will be a necessity.

Climate action. Not climate words.

Zurich works closely with customers to tailor holistic solutions for evolving sustainability risk needs. For example, when construction customers began using mass timber in their projects, Zurich was the first insurer to offer coverage, with ZRS developing assessment tools to support these projects. ZRS customers also benefit from Zurich’s broad expertise to address the interconnected risks of climate, supply chain, cyber and workforce exposures.

Zurich has made climate and environmental impact a top priority within our own business practices. These include being the first insurer to sign on to the United Nations’ ’1.5°C target goal of the Paris Agreement, setting a goal for net-zero emissions by 2030, transforming our company auto fleet to all electric or hybrid vehicles by 2025, and sponsoring The Zurich Forest, a major project battling deforestation in Brazil.
